There is a groundbreaking new show premiering on June 23rd on Lifetime called Devious Maids. Devious Maids is from the creators of Desperate Housewives and Executive Producer, Eva Longoria. I had the privileged of not only getting to go to an advanced screening of the first episode but also getting to take part in a question and answer session with 2 of the beautiful stars of the show, Roselyn Sanchez and Dania Ramirez. What makes Devious Maids unique is that it is the first primetime show that features an all Latina main cast.
Devious Maids follows a tight knit group of ambitious Beverly Hills maids with big personalities and dreams of their own. The maids’ passions and intrigue keep them at the center of the drama as tensions ignite between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have mores’. Affairs revealed, secret lives exposed and a maid is found dead in a Beverly Hills mansion. Finding the truth means digging through piles of dirty laundry and who better do that then the maid. Truth is power and the upper hand constantly shifts as dirty secrets are revealed. With these mansions, maids and murder…class warfare can be just as fun as it is dirty.
Devious Maids turns the stereotypical “Hispanic maid character” upside-down. Normally the Hispanic maid character in a show is very 1 dimensional. She comes in for comic relief or is just working in the background but with Devious Maids, the 5 main characters are anything but 1 dimensional. They all have well developed characters with stories, plot twists, mystery, and more. They are strong characters that audiences will fall in love with.
I enjoyed listening to Roselyn Sanchez and Dania Ramirez talk about how they both struggled to break into acting because there were so few roles for Latina women. Often they would be trying out for the same roles. Roselyn said took what she learned from trying to break into acting to help her with her character Carmen who wants to break into the music industry as a singer. Dania’s character has a child in Mexico and is desperately trying to be able to get him to America. She reflected on her own childhood as the daughter of immigrants to help getting into playing the role in Devious Maids. Both women were simply stunning and graciously answered questions from the audience but what struck me the most was that they both took the time to not only retweet, but actually reply back to my tweet of a picture of them together.
Grab your girlfriends and tune in to Devious Maids starting June 23rd at 10 p.m. EST on Lifetime.
Disclosure: I was invited to an advanced screening of Devious Maids and Q&A session but I did not receive any other compensation. All opinions are 100% my own.
